Partner profile

The Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and for Bibliographic Information (ICCU) promotes cataloguing and documentation activities of the library heritage producing the standard rules for cataloguing and digitisation, under the authority of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.

ICCU also coordinates national and international initiatives related to e-Infrastructures. In particular, the 3 main projects in DCH – SBN, Internet Culturale, and CulturaItalia – use the broadband connection offered by GARR, the Italian NREN.

The National Library Service – SBN (www.sbn.it) is the Italian libraries network carried out in cooperation with Regions and Universities. Over 4,500 state, university, academy, local authority libraries, public and private, participate in SBN under the coordination of ICCU.

Internet Culturale (www.internetculturale.it) is the portal of the Italian libraries. Thanks to Internet Culturale the users can access the digital and multimedia heritage (over 8,5 M records) on literary, scientific, and music culture.

CulturaItalia (www.culturaitalia.it) is the Italian culture portal. It proposes a guided access to the world of Italian culture thanks to the cross-domain approach. Currently CulturaItalia gathers over 2,5 M data from the Italian cultural institutions, public and private, national, regional, and local.

As to the European projects, ICCU coordinates DC-NET (www.dc-net.org) and INDICATE
(www.indicate-project.org), both aiming at establishing connections between the e-Infrastructure world and the cultural institutions dealing with cultural heritage. DC-NET in particular identified the service priorities for the DCH sector and preservation is on the top of the chart.

Role in the project

ICCU is the Project Coordinator and the leader of WP1 Project Management and WP2 Dissemination and sustainability and the respective tasks and participates to the WP5 Proof of concept running the experiment in Italy.
